Who is eligible to rent textbooks?
Any Hobart and William Smith Colleges student, 18 years or older, can rent a textbook while supplies last.
What if I am not 18 years old?
Parents can rent textbooks on behalf of their student. However, all policies still apply including return deadlines.
Who owns the rental textbooks?
Rental textbooks are the property of The College Store at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Can I rent all of my textbooks?
Not at this time. We are working with publishers and wholesalers to identify as many rental titles as possible. Generally speaking, a book needs to be a popular title and early in its life cycle to qualify for a rental program. Popular title is defined by the number of colleges and universities using the title. Early life cycle is defined as a recently released edition. Not all textbooks used on campus fall into these two categories.
Can I rent a textbook at any time?
Yes. You can rent a textbook at any time in the semester while supplies last.
How long can I keep the rented textbook?
You must return the rented textbook immediately following the end of the last scheduled final exam for the semester in which the textbook was rented. Returns will NOT be accepted after 3 days from the last final exam for the semester in which the textbook was rented.
Is the rental option a better deal?
It depends. You need to look carefully at your other options and consider the true end cost and what you want from the book. Do you want the cheapest alternative? Do you want to keep the book for reference? Will you need the book for an upcoming class?
Rental fees are generally 50-65% cheaper than purchasing the new book equivalent but the book has to be returned in salable condition with minimal highlighting and writing. You can not sell the rented textbook at buyback or keep it for your library.
The best economic value in textbooks many times is to buy a used textbook and sell it back at the bookstore’s buyback for 50% of the original purchase price. The 50% can only be paid if the faculty member has notified the bookstore, prior to buyback, that the textbook will be used in an upcoming semester. The net cost to use the textbook in this scenario is typically 37% of the new textbook price
How do I rent a textbook?
You can “order” your rental textbook on line for a specific time period at collegestore.hws.edu by clicking on Textbooks, or you can see someone in the Textbook Department at The College Store. You will need to complete and sign a Textbook Rental Agreement which outlines the Terms and Conditions of the rental Agreement. The Agreement stipulates that The College Store will have a valid credit card or debit card on file for Payment Security for applied fees. See “Payment Security” below.
How do I pay the rental fees for a textbook?
You can use Visa, MasterCard, debit card, Bookstore Charge Account, or a pre-approved Business Office Charge (SFA, HEOP, etc.)
Can I highlight and write in the rented textbook?
Yes. Minimal and normal highlighting and writing is acceptable. The College Store determines salable condition and all such decisions are final.
Do I have to rent my textbooks?
No. Renting a textbook is an alternative to purchasing a textbook.
Can I choose to purchase my rented textbook?
Yes. You may choose to purchase your rented textbook after the normal return policy for textbooks expires. Typically, the return policy expires 2 weeks after the first day of class each semester. Subsequent purchase of a rented textbook is considered a final sale.
What happens if I drop the class for which I rented the textbook?
Returns of rented textbooks for full refund are accepted during the SECOND week of classes each semester if the class has been dropped. Within the second week of class you will need to present The College Store with your receipt, the rented textbook, and a drop/add slip signed by the faculty member. Your rental fee will be credited to the original payment tender. i.e. Visa, MasterCard, Bookstore Charge Account, etc.
Can I return my rented textbook and have my rental fee refunded?
Only in the following situations:
1. Proof that the course was canceled by The Colleges.
2. You dropped the class and present a drop/add slip with faculty signature within the second week of class.
3. You chose to purchase your rental textbook.
When do I need to return my rented textbook to The College Store?
You need to return your rented textbook to the Textbook Department at The College Store immediately following the end of the last final exam for the semester in which you rented the textbook. Returns will NOT be accepted after 3 days from the last final exam for the semester in which the textbook was rented.
What happens if my rented textbook is lost, stolen, or damaged?
You are responsible for the rented textbook until such time as you return it to The College Store. Additional fees apply if the rented textbook is lost, stolen, damaged, or returned late. See Fee Structure, below.
What happens if I do not return my rented textbook?
The rented textbook will be considered “lost” and you will be charged a fee. See Fee Structure, below.
Why are additional fees applied if I return my rented textbook late?
Additional fees are applied to cover the additional expenses of processing a late return which include, but are not limited to insurance, shipping, and handling charges.
Why are additional fees applied if I lose, damage, or don’t return my rented textbook?
The rented textbook is the property of The College Store. The additional fees cover the additional expenses of finding another copy of the textbook to replace the one that was lost, stolen, or damaged.
Why can I not return the rented textbook after a specific date?
Our textbook rental program is unique to each semester. Each semester has a specific end date. Once the end date of a semester is reached all non-returned rented textbooks are considered “lost” and additional fees are applied.

Credit Card or Debit Card: I authorize The College Store to have a valid credit card or debit card number and expiration date on file for the entire rental period. I will not cancel or exceed the purchasing limit of the credit card or debit card listed above until the rented textbook(s) have been returned to The College Store or until all fees associated with non-returns and damages are paid.
Bookstore Student Charge Account: A Bookstore Student Charge Account must be established prior to all textbook rentals. I will not cancel or exceed the purchasing limit of my Bookstore Charge Account as listed above until the rented textbooks have been returned to The College Store or until all fees associated with non-returns and damages are paid.
NOTE: In the event that the credit card, debit card, or Bookstore Charge Account on file for this Agreement is no longer valid or in the event that the purchasing limit of said credit card, debit card, or Bookstore Charge Account has been exceeded, The College Store will bill you through the Student Account Office at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Registration privileges for future classes may be revoked if fees remain unpaid.
