AIME CESAIRE, PAUL CHAMBERLAND ET LE PAYS NATAL

Item Description

DRINKS AT THE STAND-UP TRAGEDY CLUB

Item Description

JAMES CRENNER, PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF ENGLISH

Crenner’s collection, "Drinks at the Stand-Up Tragedy Club," is a collection poems spanning about a 10-year period recently published by the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Press and in conjunction with Wolf at the Door Press.

“Very few of them were originally conceived with others of them in mind, so it isn't easy to characterize the book as a whole,” said Crenner of his work. And with 11 dramatic monologues scattered throughout, spoken by such odd narrators as Melpomene, the muse of tragedy, and the hare in Zeno's paradox, Crenner believes the poems represent a great variety of styles.

“I remember Jim Crenner writing with the most elegant intelligence of any of our little group of young poets who had stumbled into Iowa City in the sixties. He was also the best athlete and the best looking. His poetry sang with intelligence. Now look at what he has made through the years. His is a poetry that sees through civilization and time while employing all the graces and grace notes available to both. And just when you think it's a lullaby... oh, you'll see. Here are the detailed days of our lives and our larger culture. Here is an educated wit applied to a learned self-awareness. Here are mythological characters reborn alongside our versions of their lives. Here, too, one will come upon an amazing reincarnation of an erotic Emily Dickinson. Try doing that. Whoever opens this collection will keep the light on late.” — Marvin Bell

“Poetry contains philosophy, frames it, cradles it. Who says the intellect can’t have its laments and recitatives? Jim Crenner’s poems are steeped in tradition and remain strictly observant of our times.” — Stephen Kuusisto

FALLING AWAKE

Item Description

SHARON WALSH, Short-Term Programs Coordinator, Center for Global Education

Jane has been seeing Dr. Oberman - therapist, guru and love object - hoping he can save her from a past she cannot bear to face. When he gets too close to the truth, she flees, and begins a long-distance road trip through American towns and European capitals. But is the journey real or just a figment of Jane's troubled psyche? Jane conveys the details of her life using fantasy, dream sequences, stream-of-consciousness lists, Polaroid snapshots, excerpts of her therapy sessions and sometimes even outright lies. As she travels, Jane muses on martyred saints, Freudian theory, Renaissance art and lost love. Falling Awake is a story about the messiness of life, the strength we attribute to particular events and the way one woman struggles to overcome the forces of her "fate". It chronicles the damage human beings do to one another, both deliberately and unwittingly, but is ultimately about redemption and the power that we all possess to save ourselves.

GENRE CHOICES GENDER QUESTIONS

Item Description

MARY GERHART, Professor of Religious Studies Emerita

"Genre and gender share not only a common etymology but also a joint history of misreading, which ranges from their being completely ignored on the one hand to their being cast into unbreakable stereotypes on the other. Mary Gerhart's Genre Choices, Gender Questions opens these two concepts to inquiry and locates their changing relationships at the center of critical interpretation." "Gerhart demonstrates that a theory of genre must move beyond mere categorizing. She summarizes the significant stages in the history of thinking about genre from Plato to Derrida and proposes a new role for genre that makes it pivotal in current discussions of critical theory. Developing a model of genre that is epistemological, historical, theoretical, and praxis oriented, she tests it in relation to such fields as religious studies, speech-act theory, cultural studies, and biblical hermeneutics, but above all by applying it to the interpretation of narrative fiction and film." "Genre Choices, Gender Questions explores the complex and ambiguous relationship between genre and gender. Drawing on recent developments in gender studies, Gerhart examines the fluid relationship between the changing status of women authors in such genres as courtly love poetry, the novel, and biblical narrative and the legitimation or devaluation of those genres." "Genre Choices, Gender Questions deals lucidly with complex concepts. focus is never narrow, but opens out consistently toward ancillary issues such as feminist readings and deconstructionism, which strengthen the author's argument. Gerhart convincingly suggests the profound implications of genre and gender, as she redefines them, for both literary criticism and religious studies." "Genre Choices, Gender Questions is volume 9 of the Oklahoma Project for Discourse and Theory."--BOOK JACKET. Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Image For IN PLACE

IN PLACE

Item Description
TONI FLORES

In Place is a collection of poems by the late Toni Flores, an anthropologist with a special interest in folklore, folk art, and traditional life, particularly as experienced by women. Her poetry was often occasioned by her fieldwork, though in later years her poems turned increasingly inward. Flores's scholarly work was published widely in her lifetime and included research on humanistic anthropology, field poetry, ethnicity and gender, the birthing movement, ethnic cooking, Mexican folk artist Teodora Blanco, and nineteenth-century feminist Matilda Joslyn Gage. She was the influential poetry editor of Anthropology and Humanism Quarterly, and taught from 1971 until her death in 1997 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where she was treasured by generations of students. "When an anthropologist of her kind finds she has to come out with poetry, we should listen carefully because such a person is super-excellently informed about how the world is . . . Such a poet has her ear to the ground of the planet itself. She is making nothing up." -From the Introduction by Edith Turner "Those who did not know Toni Flores in life can gain a keen sense of her from the lines of her poems. An unobtrusive style, yet with quiet music ("all the sweet secretions"), description that can become depth, depth of joy arriving ("I am drunk on bread . . . ") and of life ending ("My own death uncurls inside me . . . "). One has a sense of someone who lived and wrote with uncompromising clarity, as if there were no other way."-Dell Hymes, University of Virginia A blacksmith once told me that iron is stupid. It cannot tell the hammer from the anvil but takes it blows from both sides at once. -"What the Blacksmith Said," by Toni Flores

IN TERRORS WAKE

Item Description

Peter R. Beckman, Emeritus Professor of Political Science Ph.D.

Al-Qaeda's terror attacks on New York and Washington became a living image for many Americans far beyond those deadly strikes. The shock waves quickly reached the placid campus of Tennyson College in upstate New York. Sameen Dehdashty, an Iranian by birth, comes to see herself as a target for revenge and turns to her faculty advisor for help. Professor Henry Carey and his wife Gerri are caught up in a troubling new world as they offer shelter to Sameen. The Careys now find themselves beset by anxious and demanding parents, by neighbors who believe that the President has personally charged them with uncovering terrorist cells in the United States, and by males with romantic interests in Sameen, including Sameen's fiance and the Carey's own son Michael, who, in the aftermath of 9/11, awaits deployment orders with the 10th Mountain Division. Henry Carey's efforts to provide a safe haven for Sameen become entangled with the interests of the Central Intelligence Agency, and when death becomes part of Henry Carey's world, Detective Nicholas DiBartolo comes knocking, for the professor or members of his family seem to be intimately involved.

Item Description
METAPHORIC PROCESS: The Creation of Scientific and Religious Understanding

MARY GERHART, Professor Emerita of Religious Studies

I strongly recommend this book, as much for its audacity as for its intellectual honesty. Here we have a professor of physics and a professor of religious studies who have dared to venture beyond the safe shores of language and to push an epistemological inquiry beyond itself and into the very heart of ontology. But they earn the right to this audacity by the frankness of their questions, the didactic force if their remarkably well chosen examples, and the rigor of the advance of meditation leading from the parallel between science and religion to their exchange. this book thus reveals itself to be an excellent illustration of its central theme: knowledge in process. Paul Ricoeur
